Hiring Staff

Hiring in Tasty Chef is a floor decision, not a collectible hunt. You bring an animal employee onto the milk tea line so a ticket gets greeted, brewed, or restocked while you handle the cup that is about to expire. Xpercent Games is aiming the full Steam Windows build at September 2026. The staff board you can already read in the demo is the same board you should learn now.

This page is the roster loop: where you recruit, how to read a card, how to number duties, when to pay a wage, and when to Recall. Pair it with solo play if you are the only human, and with co-op if a friend will stand on the same aisle. Ticket construction still lives in how to play. Role comparisons sit on the staff list.

Where you actually recruit

From an idle shop hub, open Staff or Recruit on the left column. Those panels are the employee boards. On Tasty Town, the Hiring Agency is the overworld stop for the same job. Do not confuse it with the Style Boutique (outfits and appearance) or the Town Bank (gold exchanged with town funds). A new hat does not take orders.

You do not need a bakery or sushi shop to hire. Those venues still show as under construction on the demo map. Stay in the Milk Tea Shop, hire for that line, and ignore the 38/38 assigned count until the shop is actually that large. That screenshot is late-game density, not a tutorial checklist. Read getting started if you have not run a single shift yet.

How to read an employee card

Official staff tickets show a species, a rarity, a daily wage, an upgrade cost, and a compact stat list. Confirmed rarity tags are R, SR, and SSR. Confirmed species in art and shots include Deer, Bear, Beaver, Koala, Sheep, Red Panda, plus cats, raccoons, and penguins. Confirmed stat labels include:

  • Daily wage (examples such as 40 gold)
  • Upgrade cost
  • Level Move Bonus
  • Restock per Trip
  • Mistakes per Drink
  • Tips
  • Movement Speed
  • Team Rhythm

Read those numbers. Do not invent a hidden species skill. This wiki will not claim a penguin is the only valid restocker or that SSR auto-clears a rush. A cheap R with Restock Supplies set to 1 can save a crate wall better than an expensive SSR you never assigned.

Shop Team versus Reserve

The board splits the roster into Shop Team (on the floor of the current restaurant) and Reserve (benched). Hiring someone is not the same as putting them to work. If they sit in Reserve, they are not greeting, brewing, or carrying crates. Move the bodies you paid for onto Shop Team before you press Start Service.

Recall is the reverse. Use it when an employee is walking the wrong loop, standing on a brewer you need, or drawing a wage you cannot defend. Recalling is not a punishment animation we will invent. It is how you shrink the floor back to a size the aisle can hold.

Numbered duties, up to three

Each employee can hold up to three duties with a priority number. Screenshots show this trio:

  1. Take Orders — greets waiting customers and creates tickets / orders.
  2. Make & Serve Drinks — accepts an order, prepares the full drink, and delivers it.
  3. Restock Supplies — moves ingredients from the warehouse to kitchen stations.

Priority is the whole system. A deer with Make & Serve as 1 and Restock unset will brew until the coconut crate is empty, then keep walking to a dead dispenser. A beaver with Restock as 1 and no greeter will fill ice while the dining room stays silent. Typical early setups:

  • One employee: Take Orders 1, Make & Serve Drinks 2. You restock when Stock Alert fires.
  • Two employees: greeter on Take Orders 1; drink maker on Make & Serve 1 with Restock 2.
  • After crates start flashing: give someone Restock Supplies as 1 and park crates on a clear wall, as kitchen layout describes.

Do not give three bodies the same Make & Serve 1 and then blame pathing. They will compete for the same Matcha Tea Brewer. Split jobs the same way co-op players should split stations.

Wages, upgrades, and the bank

A daily wage is rent on that body. Forty gold in a screenshot is an example, not a universal price. If the shop prints less than the bench costs, Recall someone. Upgrade cost is a second gold sink; do not max a worker whose duty is unset. Town Bank converts shop gold and town funds later. It will not pay for a shift that hired twelve animals and enabled every topping. Use the menu planner to shrink drinks before you grow the payroll.

Style Boutique spending is cosmetic. Pay wages and cup racks first.

Take over and Stock Alert are hiring tests

During service, employee tickets show a Take over button. Press it when their timer is dying or they are stuck behind a crate. You inherit the cup and finish the remaining steps. Taking over every healthy ticket trains you to wrestle the AI and wastes the wage. Taking over never is how a 4.9 rating turns into a pile of spoiled drinks.

Stock Alert is the restocker’s exam. If the alert fires and nobody has Restock Supplies, you are the warehouse. Finish the cup in your hands, then walk the crate wall. If a restocker is already assigned, do not sprint through the dining room with a sack unless the alert is red and they are glued to a ticket.

A first roster that can finish a cup

  1. Learn one drink yourself. Practice on the Set Menu screen if the build offers it.
  2. Hire one affordable body. Set Take Orders to 1.
  3. Run a short shift. You brew; they greet.
  4. Hire a second body only after tickets stack. Set Make & Serve Drinks to 1.
  5. Add Restock Supplies when Stock Alert repeats.
  6. Stop. Do not chase Assigned 38/38.

That six-step loop is enough for the milk tea demo. When bakery or sushi leaves “under construction” on your Tasty Town map, rebuild duties for the new equipment instead of copying tea habits onto a conveyor. Restaurant types keeps those shops distinct.

Where hiring meets layout and people

Staff pathing is only as good as the aisle. Cups, tea, milk, ice, toppings in a corridor. Crates on the back wall. A passing lane if a human friend is coming — widen before they join, using co-op and the kitchen flow planner. Solo owners can keep a tighter line; see solo play.

Return to the players hub when you need the overview, and to guides when the problem is a ticket, not a roster. For store access, demo notes, and studio contact (contact@onepercentstudio.games), use Steam links, demo notes, and support.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for milk tea shifts, staff, and the September 2026 launch.

Where do I hire staff in Tasty Chef?

Use Staff or Recruit on the shop hub, or visit the Hiring Agency on Tasty Town. Style Boutique only changes appearance.

How many duties can one employee hold?

Up to three, with numbered priority. The confirmed trio is Take Orders, Make & Serve Drinks, and Restock Supplies.

What does Recall do?

Recall pulls an employee off the floor so they leave Shop Team work. Use it when they block a station or cost too much gold.

Should I fill 38 of 38 staff slots?

No. Assigned 38/38 is a late screenshot, not a starter goal. Hire one greeter and one drink maker first.
